In cold climates, windows can represent significant heat loss because of their low insulative value relative to other components of the building shell. IUCN has been working with the National Development Bank of Palau to promote energy efficiency and encourage behavioural change towards energy consumption at a national scale. Nearly 60 energy efficient homes have been built. This project is helping Palau to achieve its national target of 20% renewable energy and 30% energy efficiency by 2020 and is kindly supported by the Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS), Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Austrian Development Cooperation.

A group of researchers at the University of Alaska Anchorage are using locally-grown mushrooms to produce blocks of foam-like insulation. Professor Philippe Amstislavski, Maria D. White, and fellow researchers are hoping to create a commercially viable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional forms of insulation on the market today.
